Hoyer Applauds Pre-Kindergarten Expansion Grant Announcement

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement today after Lt. Governor Brown announced a statewide list of recipients of $4.3 million in Pre-Kindergarten Expansion Grants:

“Today, Lt. Governor Brown joined education stakeholders to announce $4.3 million in Pre-Kindergarten Expansion Grants, which were made possible through the Pre-Kindergarten Expansion Act of 2014 passed by the Maryland General Assembly and signed into law this year. Thanks to Maryland’s Judy Centers, we’ve seen significant results here in Maryland, with more children kindergarten-ready and more families prepared to support their children’s learning. This grant funding will help us expand this highly successful model, as well as other pre-kindergarten programs in the state. I applaud Lt. Governor Brown for his commitment to early childhood education, and I look forward to working with him and all stakeholders to ensure more Maryland students have access to affordable, quality education.”

Judy Centers provide children ages birth to five and their families with access to early childhood education and a range of comprehensive services, including preventive health screenings, counseling, and dental check-ups, that complement students’ learning. Today’s grant announcement will allow for four new Judy Centers across the state of Maryland, in addition to other high-quality, early childhood programs.
