Hoyer Attends 17th Annual Louis Goldstein Dinner

CHESAPEAKE BEACH, MD – Tonight, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) attended the Calvert County Democratic Central Committee's 17th Annual Louis L. Goldstein Dinner, where he introduced the keynote speaker, U.S. Secretary of Labor Tom Perez. The Central Committee presented several awards including the Louis Goldstein Award, which was presented to organized labor. Other award recipients included Ruth Contee, Central Committee Chairman's Award; Kelly McConkey, Community Service Award; C. Ann Brown, Dan Pike Volunteer of the Year; and Jesse Jo Bowen, Calvert Democratic Party Special Award.

“I was proud to join fellow Democrats in Calvert County tonight to celebrate the life and  legacy of Louis Goldstein and to pay tribute to the men and women of organized labor for their hard-fought contribution to our country,” stated Congressman Hoyer. “It’s important that we understand strong unions and workers that are treated well are not an obstacle for economic growth but one of the key ingredients for it. The way to grow our middle class is by making sure that every worker who wants one can find a job that pays well, provides a safe work environment, and offers good benefits– such as affordable health insurance, help saving for retirement, child care, and paid parental and family leave. I will continue to work with my colleagues in the Maryland Delegation to make sure that our working men and women do not see their rights undermined. I appreciate the work the Central Committee is doing in Calvert County to strengthen our party and stand up for the values we hold dear.”

Congressman Hoyer and the Central Committee also paid tribute to Carol Hausmann, the wife of Central Committee member Thomas Hausmann, who succumbed to her injuries from a house fire earlier this week. They also recognized two Prince George’s County first responders, Assistant Fire Chief Tommy Breen and Paramedic Lieutenant C.J. Smart, who were off duty when they went inside the Hausmann's burning home in an attempt to save Carol's life. They were thanked for their courage and dedication to serving the community.

Congressman Hoyer received the Louis L. Goldstein Award in 2013. There were several federal, state, and local elected officials in attendance tonight including U.S. Senator Ben Cardin, Congresswoman Donna Edwards, Congressman John Delaney, Maryland Senate President Mike Miller, Attorney General Brian Frosh, State Delegate Michael Jackson, Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker, and Central Committee Chair Cliff Savoy.
