Hoyer Meets with Maryland DREAMers and CASA

WASHINGTON, DC – This afternoon,Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) met with Maryland DREAMers and CASA Executive Director Gustavo Torres to discuss the importance of passing the DREAM Act to protect DREAMers in Maryland and across the nation. Since the Trump Administration ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in September, 122 DREAMers have lost their protections each day.

“I want to thank the DREAMers who joined me this afternoon and shared their deeply personal stories,” said Congressman Hoyer. “DREAMers are students, medical professionals, teachers, members of our military, and emergency personnel. They are making real contributions to their communities every day. By rescinding the DACA program, the Trump Administration left thousands of hardworking individuals in limbo, unsure of whether they will be sent back to countries they do not know.”

“With thousands of DREAMers losing their DACA protections each month, it’s imperative that Congress reaches an agreement now on bipartisan legislation to protect these individuals,” continued Congressman Hoyer. “I want to thank Gustavo and CASA for the important work they are doing in communities throughout Maryland to advocate for DREAMers. I won’t stop working until DREAMers have the protections they deserve.”

“We are glad to have allies like Congressman Hoyer at this crucial time. Every day hundreds of immigrant youth, who have been playing by the rules, continue to lose their status,” said CASA’s Executive Director Gustavo Torres. “Congress must act now and negotiate a DREAM Act that helps DREAMers but does not come at the expense of their families and their communities.”
