LEONARDTOWN, MD – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement after delivering remarks last night at the Annual St. Mary's County Democrat of the Year Dinner:
“Congratulations to Karl Kirby Pence on his recognition as St. Mary's Democrat of the Year and to all of the awardees. They have all given so much to the Democratic Club of St. Mary's County and to the fight for justice, equality, and opportunity throughout this county and Maryland.
“The federal election in 2016 – one that I believe will make history for our party and for our country and energize many voters – will provide St. Mary’s County Democrats with an opportunity to register new voters, hold persuasive conversations with our neighbors, and lay the groundwork for strong campaigns for state and local offices in 2018. We fought hard and ran well last year, and in the toughest of conditions we fell a little short. The harder we work to spread our message and grow our voter base, the better the conditions will be in 2016 and 2018.
"We have a difficult but exciting journey ahead as St. Mary’s County Democrats. That journey to victory begins now, and I thank all of you for your support, your energy, your time, and your unfailing belief in what we can do – and what we are called to do – together to strengthen our communities and our country."
