BOWIE, MD - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement this morning announcing his endorsement of Delegate Jazz Lewis to serve as the next Congressman from Maryland's Fourth Congressional District:

"At a time where integrity and commitment to family, faith, and country is so very important, Delegate Jazz Lewis has those traits in abundance. I've known Jazz Lewis and his family very well over the last decade. He is a dear friend, and I can think of no one I would rather have as my partner in representing Prince Georgians in Congress. That is why I am proud to give Jazz my strongest endorsement in his campaign for Congress from Maryland's Fourth District.

"Jazz represents the best of Prince George's County. I've seen up close his devotion to his work, to the people of Prince George's County where he was born and raised, and to the community of Glenarden where he chose to start his family. Whether as a community organizer, as the Democratic Caucus Chair in the Maryland House of Delegates, or now as a candidate for Congress, Jazz has always fought for our community.

"While on my staff, Jazz worked hard to ensure that Prince Georgians were being served effectively. He worked closely with the rest of my team to ensure that the County received every federal dollar it was due under the CARES Act, the American Rescue Plan, and other critical legislation.

"After the Supreme Court weakened the Voting Rights Act in 2013, Jazz brought my dear friend and American civil rights hero, the late Rep. John Lewis, to Prince George's County to speak with residents about the need for new voting rights legislation and how Democrats ought to get it done.

"Following the shocking deaths of George Floyd, Breanna Taylor, and too many others, Jazz was a leading voice in the Maryland House of Delegates to ensure Maryland took action on police accountability and criminal justice reform, crafting important sections of the legislation that will keep fellow Marylanders safe. We need leaders with his commitment and understanding of the issues to come to Congress and help Democrats enact the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

"Jazz has demonstrated that he has what it takes to get the job done. He has my full support and I hope Prince Georgians will join me in supporting him to be the next Congressman from the Fourth District."
