Hoyer Receives Key Endorsements by Gun Safety Organizations

BOWIE, MD -- Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) announced today that he has received the endorsement of three major gun-safety organizations, BradyPAC, Giffords, and Everytown for Gun Safety. BradyPAC is the campaign arm of the Brady Campaign to End Gun Violence, one of America's oldest gun-safety organizations. Giffords is the foundation launched by former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly after the deadly mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 to support candidates committed to passing gun safety legislation. Everytown for Gun Safety is a non-profit organization that advocates for commonsense gun violence prevention legislation. All three endorsed Congressman Hoyer because of his many years of leadership in the House working to secure passage of legislation that would make it harder for deadly firearms to end up in the hands of those who would use them to kill and injure Americans.

"I am so proud to receive these endorsements," Congressman Hoyer said. "Deadly gun violence is a horrific scourge that plagues our communities and has led to unthinkable acts of violence in our homes, schools, places of worship, entertainment venues, workplaces, and streets. I was proud to bring H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act, to the Floor last year and secure its passage through the House, and I will continue to push for additional measures to keep our people safe from gun violence. I was honored to serve with Rep. Giffords during her time in office, and I will keep working alongside her foundation, the Brady Campaign, and Everytown for Gun Safety to advance this critical agenda."

"Congressman Hoyer has minced no words when challenging his colleagues to act on the gun violence epidemic, and, as Majority Leader, he has bravely placed the issue of gun safety front and center," said Brian Lemek, Executive Director of BradyPAC. "His devotion to protecting the families of Maryland's Fifth District and beyond make us proud to endorse him!“

"When it comes to gun safety, leadership requires the courage to put the safety of the many over the money and influence of a few," the Giffords organization said in a statement endorsing Congressman Hoyer and six other House Democratic leaders. "That’s exactly what these House leaders did in passing lifesaving gun safety legislation like universal background checks. They took on the gun lobby and showed America that change is possible. But our fight against gun violence is not over—we need each of these gun safety champions to continue their leadership in the House of Representatives and pass gun safety legislation into law.”

"Moms Demand Action is grateful for the work Congressman Hoyer has done throughout his entire career to make our communities safer," said Kara Dudley, Maryland Chapter, Moms Demand Action. "Congressman Hoyer has fought time and time again for commonsense legislation to protect our families from gun violence, and thanks to his leadership, the House voted to enact common-sense background checks at last. Everytown is proud to endorse Congressman Hoyer for reelection, and we are confident he will continue to champion this issue."

The primary election for Maryland's Fifth Congressional District will take place on Tuesday, June 2, and ballots will be cast primarily by mail. Every ballot must be completed and returned with a postmark no later than 8:00pm on June 2 to be counted. No postage is necessary to return a completed ballot by mail.
