WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today after the Maryland House of Delegates unanimously elected Speaker Pro Tem Adrienne Jones to serve as Speaker of the House of Delegates:

“Today is a historic day for the state of Maryland. I join in congratulating Speaker Pro Tem Adrienne Jones on her election as Speaker of the House of Delegates, the first African American and the first woman to serve in that role. Speaker Jones’ wealth of experience and expertise serving as Speaker Pro Tem will greatly benefit the House of Delegates, and I look forward to the important work she will do for the people of Maryland.

“I also want to thank Chairman Dereck Davis and Chairwoman Maggie McIntosh for their leadership and commitment to keeping the Caucus together. Delegates Davis and McIntosh have served our state with distinction, and I am confident they will work closely with Speaker Jones to improve the lives of all Marylanders.

“I look forward to working together with Speaker Jones, Delegates Davis and McIntosh, and the rest of the House of Delegates to address the critical issues facing families in Maryland.”
