Nonpartisan Environmental Group Awards Hoyer High Marks
WASHINGTON DC – Today the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) a national nonpartisan organization released their 2011 National Environmental Scorecard which includes Member scores for environmental public health and energy votes taken during the First Session of the 112th Congress. Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) received a 97% rating a testament to his efforts to protect the environment and promote good environmental and energy policies. “I am pleased to have received a nearly perfect rating from the LCV on their annual scorecard ” stated Congressman Hoyer. “In Maryland we are blessed with outstanding natural resources and I strongly believe that protecting our environment and pursuing responsible energy policies should remain a priority. I am dedicated to doing so and will continue working with my colleagues in Congress to ensure that we protect and invest in Maryland and our nation as a whole to determine the best ways to keep our land air and water clean.” Throughout his career Hoyer has led efforts to clean up the Chesapeake Bay and the Patuxent Potomac Anacostia and St. Mary's Rivers fighting for and securing federal funding to address a variety of restoration and water quality issues in these Fifth District waterways. The 2011 Scorecard includes 35 House votes ranging from public health protections to clean energy to land and wildlife conservation. While Hoyer has been a staunch supporter of these environmental and energy issues and has voted accordingly LCV noted in their report that under Republican leadership “the 2011 Scorecard reflects the most anti-environmental session of the U.S. House of Representatives in history featuring unparalleled assaults on our nation’s bedrock environmental and public health safeguards.” Hoyer continued: “I share LCV’s disappointment that so many Members chose not to support responsible environmental and energy policies.
