Hoyer Secures Endorsements from Major Labor Unions

BOWIE, MD - Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) shared news that he has been endorsed by eleven key unions representing both public- and private-sector workers in Maryland's Fifth District. These unions organize teachers, postal workers, federal employees, tradespeople, as well as manufacturers, forming the backbone of our communities and advancing the cause of workers' rights.  Their endorsement is a reflection of Congressman Hoyer's leadership on issues affecting workers and collective bargaining and his strong record as a champion for working families.  Long a supporter of organized labor, Congressman Hoyer brought the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act to the Floor and helped pass it, and he worked hard to secure passage of major legislation last year to make health care, child care, education, and housing more affordable for working people.

The eleven unions that have endorsed Congressman Hoyer for re-election are:

  • American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE)
  • Maryland State and DC AFL-CIO
  • International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF)
  • International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 26
  • Maryland State Association of Letter Carriers
  • National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU)
  • Seafarers International Union of North America
  • SEIU Maryland/DC State Council
  • Teamsters Local 639
  • UFCW Local 400
  • United Association of Union Plumbers and Pipefitters (UA)

"I am so honored to have earned the endorsement of these important labor organizations, which together represent thousands of workers across Maryland's Fifth District," said Congressman Hoyer.  "I look forward to continuing to work closely with union leaders and with working men and women from Maryland to push for policies that enable working families to make it in America.  I will never stop fighting to protect the hard-won victories of the workers' rights movement, now under assault by Republicans in Congress, and together we will work to expand opportunities so Maryland workers can get ahead and achieve greater economic security."

"Majority Leader Hoyer has been an ardent champion of federal and D.C. workers for decades. Whenever working people need an advocate, Steny has taken the lead and rallied support among his colleagues. He is a true friend of Labor, and AFGE proudly and wholeheartedly endorses Congressman Hoyer for his reelection," said Everett Kelley, National President, AFGE.

“Congressman Hoyer has been a champion to firefighters and we are proud to endorse him for reelection in Maryland’s Fifth District. His long-standing commitment to securing resources for fire fighters has made communities in Maryland and around the nation safer. Congressman Hoyer is a true champion for public safety and working families," said Andy Pantelis, 4th District Vice President, International Association of Fire Fighters.

"The Maryland State Association of Letter Carriers is proud to announce our endorsement of Congressman Hoyer for the 5th Congressional District of MD in the U.S. House of Representatives," said Doreen Carter, President of Maryland State Association of Letter Carriers. "We appreciate his strong support for the Postal Service Reform Act of 2022 (H.R. 3076) which repeals the mandate to pre-fund retiree health care benefits decades in advance and creates a minimum of six-day delivery of mail and packages into federal law. This will eliminate the need to renew the six-day requirement every year through the congressional appropriations process. The bill also maximizes the integration of future postal annuitants into Medicare. This legislation will put the Postal Service in a better position to grow and adapt to the evolving needs of America’s households and businesses. In addition, we appreciate Congressman Hoyer's backing on other Postal issues such as door-to-door delivery, anti-privatization, and the Social Security Fairness Act (H.R. 82). By being in favor of legislation that will further strengthen the Postal Service and improve the work and lives of over 4,500 members in Maryland, he also exhibits his commitment to all 290,000 letter carriers across the United States. The Maryland State Association of Letter Carriers appreciates his steadfast support on these issues and is proud to stand for him as he will stand for us."

“Throughout his career Congressman Hoyer has fought along with us to ensure that federal employees are treated with dignity and respect and that the federal government is a model employer that provides competitive pay and benefits,” said Anthony M. Reardon, National President of the National Treasury Employees Union. “As Majority Leader, he has used his position to promote fairness and justice for union members. And as the nation continues to face a global pandemic, he has continued to show his commitment to workers by leading the way on critical issues like telework and emergency paid leave.”

“Leader Hoyer’s experience and track record speak for itself. Throughout his time in Congress, Leader Hoyer has championed working families like ours and fought to ensure all Marylanders have a fair shot at success,” said Mark McManus, General President of the United Association. “United Association members are proud to stand with Leader Hoyer because he never shies away from a fight – and he always puts working men and women first.”

“UFCW Local 400 represents over 18,000 working families throughout the state of Maryland, and it gives us great pride to extend an endorsement for the advocacy and actions Congressman Hoyer has continued to demonstrate to the working families of Maryland,” said Mark P. Federici, President of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 400 and International Vice President. “UFCW Local 400 supports candidates that have a long record of voting to support workers on the issues that affect their everyday lives. Our endorsement reflects Congressman Hoyer’s years of dedicated public service to the hard-working families of Maryland. UFCW Local 400 looks forward to working together for all those living and working in Maryland.”
